PG - 509-512 AB - South Dakota's Newborn Screening (NBS) program has been in existence for nearly 50 years. What began as a screen for a single condition has now expanded to more than 50 conditions. From 2005-2019 alone, 315 infants were confirmed as positive for a condition detected by the newborn screen in South Dakota. This article summarizes the process of newborn screening in South Dakota, the role of the primary care physician when caring for an infant with a positive screen, the groups of conditions which are included on the South Dakota NBS panel, how NBS changed over time, and the process for adding conditions to the South Dakota NBS panel.
